Preparation and Planning
Most, if not all churchs have dedicated flower arrangers who will have a small church budget to decorate the church from week to week. When you talk to the vicar at your chosen church he/she may suggest that for a modest fee, the flowers will be provided for you. This typically amounts to a pedestal and a vase of flowers on the altar.
Ultimately there is a huge difference between church flower arrangers and professional florists. The church ladies probably won't know your wedding decor and will utilise flowers and greenery from gardens, supermarkets etc. A professional florist will always buy top quality flowers direct from Holland at a much more competetive price than the local supermarket. Please do not be afraid to tell the vicar that you are bringing in your local professional florist to decorate the church. We've lost count of the number of times we've had brides in after their wedding to tell us they wish they had the flowers made by a florist. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for!
Flower choice and location
During your consultation your florist will advise you what flowers are in season, what blooms are suitable for church flower displays and of course, ideas on cost. Obvious focal points for flower displays are the outside of the church where the bride will be arriving, the doorway (and handrails if applicable) pew ends, windows and the front area of the church including the altar and pulpit area.
Pedestal arrangements need not be expensive, there will be a range of flower content and choice to suit your budget. Pew ends also can be as simple or as elaborate as your needs or budget require. Some churchs have chairs instead of pews, so chair back arrangements may be more suitable. Flowers on the altar is also very much the 'done thing'.
Finally, visit your church with your chosen florist and visualise together how you want your special day to look and feel, but firstly and most importantly all eyes should be on the bride!
Introduction
If you're looking for Church flowers then here's a few tips you may want to consider.
It doesn't take much to transform a stark and sometimes bare church into your dream of a more visually dramatic wedding location. Inside the church, pedestal arrangements and altar displays are always great for focal floral arrangements as are pew ends and window displays. Out side of the church really depends on the individual church design and decor - some have archways, rails or balconys, large front doors or other individual features, all of which can be decorated and enhanced. The big plus with church flowers is that you can remove all of your displays from the church and take them to use at your reception venue, therefore halving your costs!
